We recommend a minimum of 5 semesters of French for this program. Some Placements may require native French or native English fluency or equivalent due to internship responsibilities. If you are a native French speaker, we highly encourage you to communicate and showcase this within the application process.
You may be required to submit additional documents, depending on the needs of your CEA CAPA Global Internship Program. A CEA CAPA representative will reach out to you after you have submitted your initial application to collect any additional documents we might need.
These additional documents may include, but are not limited to:
  • A professional portfolio
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Police Background checks: If you are applying for a placement working with vulnerable populations or children, or if CEA CAPA identifies a placement opportunity with or connected to such an organization, most likely you will be required to complete a police background check in the US and the host country for certain locations.

Program Structure & Courses

You'll enroll in an internship seminar course that includes an academic seminar and an internship placement. Your internship seminar meets for 112 hours and you'll spend 12+ hours per week at your internship placement. Together, your seminar and internship placement are worth 3 credits/112 contact hours. You'll also enroll in 1 French language course and 3 elective courses. Language courses meet for 45-90 contact hours/3-6 credits, and elective courses meet for 15-90 contact hours/1-3 credits. You may earn up to a total of 15-16 credits (292-307 contact hours).

Your internship placement hours may take place Monday-Friday; the exact time of day and days of the week will be determined after you arrive. Elective courses meet Monday-Friday and class times vary.

We strongly recommend that you apply as soon as possible. Internship positions are both limited in availability and competitive; employers give priority to those who submit early!

The majority of internships require a video or in-person interview with the employer before placement is confirmed. CEA CAPA makes every effort to confirm placements by two weeks prior to the program start date at the latest, however, in some cases placements may be confirmed upon arrival. We'll do our best, but we can't guarantee placement at a particular site.

Before you leave for Aix, you'll submit an IAU course selection form and an IAU language questionnaire that estimates your language knowledge. An IAU advisor will evaluate your language questionnaire and transcript and either enroll you in courses or schedule a language placement exam that you'll take before your program starts. After you arrive on-site, French faculty will determine if you're the in correct language level; you'll have two weeks to add/drop if necessary.

It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure due to course availabilities. To ensure that you receive credit for the language level you place into, have your home university pre-approve courses at several levels before you leave for France. Please consult with your academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.
