Exploring the Many Colors of London While Studying Abroad

Exploring the Many Colors of London, England During a Study Abroad Semester

In this photoset, I chose my topic of choice to be the colors of London. Since coming to London for a study abroad semester, the weather has not been great and most days are accompanied by a gray sky. As someone who loves the color in life, I had to look towards other areas of the city to scratch that itch.

Once I started looking, it wasn’t hard to notice color everywhere: in what people wear, in the food, the buildings, and the decorations throughout the different neighborhoods. I have two photos that feature colors that add fun to an outdoor area: the umbrellas at Camden Market, and the lanterns in Chinatown.

I also have two photos that feature colorful food that I have come across, including donuts from Spitalfields Market, and a store dedicated to scones in Notting Hill.

There is also color in the city’s architecture, like the colored houses also in Notting Hill.

I think that it can be easy to allow a gray sky to put you in a dreary mood, but there is so much vibrancy in London that can help to combat that. Before I went to London to study abroad so many people questioned my choice because of how “rainy and gray” it is here. I want this photoset to show students considering studying in London and people that only characterize London through its winter weather to show that there are a lot of beautiful colorful things to enjoy here, and that London has a lot of variety to offer.

I also featured photos from the Columbia Road Flower Market and a bookstore I stumbled upon that had flowers and books of every color anyone could possibly dream of.

Finally, in direct contrast with the theme of London’s gray skies, I added a photo of a beautiful sunset that I captured in Hammersmith and a photo of Saint Paul’s Cathedral against a bright blue sky with pillowy white clouds.
