The Social Side of Studying Abroad: Forming Friendships with Other CEA CAPA Students

Making Friends While Studying Abroad with CEA CAPA

I focused on friendship as the topic for my first photoset, because my new friends really transformed my experience studying abroad with CEA CAPA. During the first day of onsite orientation in Seville, I got sick and ended up in the hospital for three days.

Due to this unfortunate timing, I missed all of orientation, first nights out, and meeting all the other students in CEA CAPA. During this difficult time, my roommates checked up on me daily and prepared bags of my belongings from our apartment to deliver to me in the hospital. They didn’t even know me for 24 hours, but already had the compassion and kindness that brought me comfort and reminded me of home.

What I Captured

I felt scared I missed out on prime bonding time, but I quickly found that these girls would be my best friends there. After being released from the hospital, my roommates immediately included me in everything they could.

We explored the streets of Sevilla in the morning, afternoon, and night, which gave us the ability to see all our new home had to offer.

I continued exploring Spain with these girls because we meshed so well.

I feel like I owe this ease of forming friendships with my roommates to the CEA CAPA housing process. They did a great job of matching us together based on our living preferences and lifestyles and it really showed each day in the apartment.

My Pictorial Purpose

I captured about half friends and half places in these pictures. These images convey the comfort that both my new friends and my new city brought to me since these pictures of people and places are what made Spain feel like home.

Some of my favorite memories are what’s pictured – from exploring Spain with my roommates to my treasured parts of Sevilla.

To conclude, I want the viewer to see that even after the literal worst possible case scenario, you can still come out on the other side and make memories with new study abroad friends that’ll last a lifetime.
