Fashion is a huge priority in France. While some Americans might sometimes look like they just rolled out of bed, French people of every age group take pride in their public appearance. It goes without saying, of course, that you can dress and do whatever you feel most comfortable with. These are just helpful tips for those trying to “fit in with the locals,” or those wanting to know what to expect of daily life. There are a few things that are important to note about clothing in France. particularly in Aix-en-Provence:

Bring Scarves

From the beginning of the semester studying abroad, I noticed that many people in Aix wear scarves. Even on the hotter days, I’ve seen people wearing skirts and dresses with scarves! I would recommend bringing some to add to your “look,” while also staying warm in the strong wind that blows through Aix!

Wear Tights Under Skirts and Shorts

I have not seen anyone (except for American students) without tights underneath their skirts, dresses, and shorts. I’m not sure of the reason behind wearing tights every time, but it is definitely noticeable when someone does not have them on.

No Loose-Fitting Clothes or Baseball Hats

When French people go outside, they are always looking their best; even children and the elderly always have fashionable clothes on. No one ever wears sweatpants out of the house, and college sweatshirts and baggy sweatshirts in general are a big no-no to locals. Lastly, though some of the younger people do wear baseball-style hats, it is not a common thing to wear hats with your favorite team on them.

Remember: no matter what you decide to bring and wear, your personal preferences and comfort are what matter the most!
