Tips for Traveling Outside of Paris

Studying abroad in Paris is step one. Step two? See as much of Europe as you can! Because Paris is centrally-located, it's a great starting point for your international adventures.

While living in Paris, I was able to travel to the UK, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. 3 out of 4 of those trips were on my own dime and really affordable! I was able to see Germany's Black Forest through an incredible trip arranged by CEA. On top of that, I explored six French cities. This was all in the span of 3.5 months, and I want to share some tips with you on how to maximize your time abroad.

Buses are your friends!

If you're willing to forego the luxury and speed of flying, there are multiple bus companies in Paris that can drive you to your dream destinations. More importantly, it will cost you a fraction of a plane ticket. I traveled all the way to London with Ouibus for 30 euro, flat. Sure, it was a long ride, but it was the only way I could afford to see the famous city. And I wasn't planning on missing it!

And if you go to London, definitely take a ride on one of these double-decker busses. They've just been updated to be more sustainable!

Go with student groups

There are a bunch student travel groups at your disposal that make traveling simple. They introduce you to new people who are also exploring the world. Some of the groups host tons of events for international students within Paris if you're looking for some excitement close to home.

Go with the flow

My absolute favorite trip was to Belgium, and I hadn't planned on going there! My friend invited me the week before, and I had no plans for the weekend, so I went. I made some fast friends who were in the same hostel room as me. I ate more fries than I'd like to admit. I laughed and laughed. And I never would've had that experience without being flexible in the moment.

Don't Bring Your Laptop

I made the mistake of bringing my laptop on a trip with me, and it was nothing more than another thing for me to lug around. Unless you have an assignment that needs doing, I suggest you leave the laptop home in order to maximize your trip. Those moments of downtime in your hotel or hostel room should be spent talking with your travel buddy. Ice skating (especially in the winter) is a great evening activity for when museums close. Time in-transit can be spent with a good book. Your back will thank you.
