Ancient Ireland: Knowth & The Hill of Tara

My classmates and I were taken by Kelly Malone, our History of Ireland professor and a pure legend, to Knowth and The Hill of Tara. These two sites are extremely significant to Irish heritage and are located near the River Boyne. Knowth was built 5000 years ago and is a passage tomb surrounded by stones with a third of the megalithic artwork in Western Europe. It has its own wood hedge and has 18 satellite tombs. The Hill of Tara is where High Kings reigned over Ireland from the Iron Age until shortly after 1169 when the English invaded Ireland. These sites are central to Irish culture, and visiting gives you a great sense of how sophisticated and powerful the ancient Irish were.
