This week students in Pipo Serrano’s Social Media course had the pleasure of meeting Marta Alonso, a young social media entrepreneur from Barcelona. At the age of 26 Marta has already founded Muuby, an online community management outsourcing service, as well as the very first Instagramers community. Marta’s innovative idea to create online communities based in individual cities using the Instagram platform has since spread around the world and now exists in 350 cities.
Following her passion for photography, Marta gave up her job in online advertising to take part in what she referred to as the ‘visual content revolution’. She emphasized that entrepreneurs – even with very limited means – can make use of different social media platforms to start their own businesses. Marta has spearheaded numerous innovative online advertising campaigns. For example, collaborating with the Spanish airline Vueling, she had Instagram users submit pictures taken in cities served by Vueling. The winning images were then displayed on the fuselage of a Vueling aircraft, thereby creating the first ever mid-air photography exhibition. Given its high impact and low cost, it’s understandable why this initiative shared a major award with American Airlines for best customer engagement campaign.

Marta has also used Instagram to promote Catalonia as a premier tourist destination, and has collaborated with one of the city's great cultural icons, the Barcelona Football Club. The latter campaign engaged fans by getting them to compete in a contest to be the official Barça photographer for a game, leading to the first ever coverage in real time of a football match on Instagram.
This was an inspiring talk on how social media are an effective – and accessible – tool for entrepreneurs, and illustrated to our students how they can make a living while pursuing their passion.
