DESCRIPTION

This course studies European environmental politics as forged in Brussels in the last ten years. It focuses on four main areas: carbon emissions; biodiversity; energy; and agriculture and food. The different interests and respective influence of actors and stakeholders (EU institutions, member states, NGOs, unions, lobbies, scientists, and the media industry are critically weighed and compared. We will break down the ways in which EU policies have been developed in recent years in each of the four areas mentioned above. A required field trip to Brussels will give students a chance to meet EU officials and experts working on EU environmental policies.
