DESCRIPTION
G.K. Chesterton once wrote that 'Literature is a luxury; fiction is a necessity.' Over the course of the semester, we will be exploring a selection of novels written in English in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, to consider the questions of what defines the genre of the novel and what functions has it served. We will explore clusters of texts that in some ways share themes or motifs, and texts that guide us towards particular historical, political, philosophical or moral issues of the times in which they were composed. The course will encourage critical and analytic reading practices through a focus on close reading, interpretation and response. Each selected author is a canonical figure in literary prose. Finally, it is hoped that the readings on the course outline will inspire students to develop and extend their experience and enjoyment of literature and reading.
