The Food, Friends, and Classes that Shaped my Semester Studying Abroad

Studying in Rome with CEA CAPA was such a unique experience that it left me with an abundance of knowledge and amazing memories. Two aspects that I felt stood out during my semester were getting to live with an Italian roommate and participating in CEA CAPA’s immersive courses like my Sketch booking in Rome and Food & Culture class.

Along with six other students from my University, I was placed with an Italian student who was local to the city of Rome, which I found to be one of the most unique and impactful parts of my trip. My Italian roommate, Aida, was a huge help when it came to finding the best spots to eat, translating when needed, and understanding Italian culture.

One of my favorite memories is her teaching me how to make a traditional Tiramisu in our kitchen together, which will stick with me forever! Not only was she a helpful guide, but also a great friend of mine who I keep in touch with today.

In terms of academics, CEA CAPA offered a wide range of classes, all of which I found to be interactive and personalized. As a Food Studies major, the class I found most interesting was Food and Culture in Italy. Not only did we have regular tastings of regional wines and traditional Italian dishes, but we were also taught about their social, cultural, and historical significance.

I learned all about Italy’s slow food movement and their dedication to fresh and local ingredients, furthering my passion for food. My Sketchbook in Rome class was also a favorite, as we made weekly trips to different landmarks around Rome including the Vatican and the Roman Forum. During class, we practiced different techniques in our personal sketchbooks which I was able to take home as a special remembrance of my time in Rome. This class gave me the opportunity to visit a number of beautiful spots, enjoy the outdoors, and connect with Rome’s rich architecture and history.

Not only did my courses expand my academic and cultural knowledge but also introduced me to some of my best friends. CEA CAPA staff emphasized a collaborative environment through group activities and trips in and outside of classes which encouraged myself and others to bond and form meaningful friendships which I am so grateful for. My semester in Rome was full of academic growth, cultural immersion, and personal connections, leaving me with an unforgettable experience.
