Museums I Explored in Amsterdam While Studying Abroad

The Many Museums I Explored in Amsterdam, Netherlands While Studying Abroad

Why I Love Museums

Museums might not be for everyone, but they certainly are for me—especially in a city like Amsterdam, where you can find a museum for almost anything! I have always loved museums for many reasons; I have a deep love for history and all things art, so I can easily spend a whole day staring at the work of a famous artist or walking through the halls of a 15th century building. I also love museums because visits can be made rain or shine, no matter the weather. This means in a city like Amsterdam where there can be sun, rain, and hail all within thirty minutes, you will never have to worry about getting rained on.

The Van Gogh Museum is an obvious must-visit while in Amsterdam. The modern building and installations pictured here mixed with the displays of his real work create the perfect exhibit.

Find Alone Time When Studying Abroad

One of the most challenging yet rewarding aspects of studying abroad is the alone time. While I see my friends regularly, there are days where I find that I must be my own friend for the time being. Taking yourself on a museum date is a great way to spend a day where you might be feeling unsure of what to do. Afterall—there are dozens to choose from in Amsterdam!

Andy Warhol's depiction of Marilyn Monroe at the Moco Museum.

The artist whose work I was most excited to see at the Moco Museum was Andy Warhol. His many depictions of Marilyn Monroe—including this one—never fail to amaze me.

Visiting Amsterdam’s Museums

I would recommend starting at Museumplein (“Museum square”). This is exactly what it sounds like; no need to bounce around the whole city when you have the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Moco Museum all within a few meters!

This outside view of the Rijksmuseum courtyard gardens is one of my favorites, especially in the springtime with all the blooming flowers.

Inside view of the Rijksmuseum Research Library.

Take a peek inside and you’ll find the Rijksmuseum Research Library, the Netherlands’s oldest, largest public art history research library. While I snapped this picture, there were actually researchers at work just down below!

See the famous “Girl with a Pearl Earring” and “The Milkmaid” works by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer at the beautiful Rijksmuseum. Its grand architecture and beautiful courtyards provide a tunnel walkway that makes it hard to miss.

While there, don’t forget to check out the Moco Museum, full of modern and immersive installations from famous artists like Andy Warhol and Banksy.

This immersive art experience at the Moco Museum, titled “Diamond Matrix” by artist Studio Irma, is incredibly popular; and for good reason! I could spend hours gazing at all the moving lights and colors.

Similarly, the Nxt Museum in Amsterdam Noord is a must for anyone interested in contemporary art.

“Heaven’s Gate” and “Creation” by Marco Brambilla at the Nxt Museum.

This exhibit at the Nxt Museum—“Heaven’s Gate” and “Creation” by Marco Brambilla—was one of my personal favorites. The assembled group of videos depict incredibly realistic clouds, fields, and cityscapes.

If you still feel as though you haven’t seen enough art (which, if you’re like me, is always) make sure to stop by Museum het Rembrandthuis (the Rembrandt House Museum). Seeing works of art from Dutch artists like Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh has really helped me to feel more in tune with the culture here, and of course learn more about the history of this fantastic country.

Taking a step back into the 17th century and being able to view the home of Rembrandt and some of his intricate works in person was surreal. This is one of the rooms where he would deal his art out of.

“Almond Blossom” is one of my favorites by Van Gogh. Seeing this in person was definitely a highlight of my time here in Amsterdam.

Of course, any visitor to Amsterdam should also make it a priority to visit the Anne Frank House; it is truly a sight worth seeing.

While pictures are not allowed inside of the actual Anne Frank House, visitors are allowed to snap pictures of the outside. This was taken from inside the extended museum during the introductory program, where we received a recap of the history of Anne Frank in the context of the Second World War.

And lastly, the Our House immersive experience of house music is great for any music lover looking to immerse themselves more deeply into the music and nightlife culture of the city. Like I said, there truly is something for everyone!

If you’re into house or techno music, get hands-on with legendary equipment like the ones pictured here at Our House! Being able to mix my own tracks while feeling the energy of Amsterdam’s iconic music scene come to life was a great experience.
