Field Trips and Academic Excursions During a Study Abroad Semester in Seville, Spain
Through CEA CAPA, I had the opportunity to explore and learn more about Sevilla in a more academic setting.
My Architecture and Painting in Sevilla class took multiple excursions, so we could study Sevilla’s beautiful architecture and paintings in real life. Our first excursion was to Itálica, which is a well-preserved Roman city about an hour or two outside of Sevilla. There, we saw the ruins and studied the parts of a domus (Roman house) and amphitheater as we walked the streets of the once-great city.

Next, we visited the Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla where we saw beautiful art and learned to distinguish the styles and periods of paintings made in Sevilla.

Our last excursion was to the Hospital de la Caridad where we sat in the churrigueresco-style chapel and analyzed two Baroque paintings by artist Valdés Leal.

With my Advertising Photography class, we took an excursion to the FAMA Everybody Exhibition to look at photographs by Hubertus von Hohenlohe.

One assignment was to take a selfie with one of the photographs!
Finally, with my Spanish for Business Class we took two class excursions. Our first field trip was to the Triana Markets where we took note of prices, common foods, and buying culture in Sevilla.

Our next excursion was to the CTJ Cartuja in the financial district where we were given a presentation on the Sevillian economy and how Sevilla supports new business ventures.

These excursions made me feel a closer connection to Sevilla and much less like a tourist. I am very grateful to my professors, Michael, Dan, and Elena for taking the time to plan and lead them.
