As more and more people in the U.S. are looking to travel abroad, the demand for a new or renewed passport has skyrocketed. The U.S. Department of State has announced much longer than usual processing times for passports—and even expedited passport requests are drastically slowed. Here are a few tips to getting your passport in time for your upcoming study abroad or internship abroad program with CEA:
1. Have a passport? Check the expiration date.
Most countries will require that you have a passport that is valid for 6 months after the end of your program date. That means if your program ends in May 2022, your passport should be valid until November 2022 at the earliest. Passport expires before then? It’s time to renew!
2. Don’t have a passport? Apply today!
Don’t wait to apply for your passport! If you know you’re going abroad soon, apply for your passport as soon as possible. Many countries will require that you have a visa if you’re going to be there for longer than 90 days, and it’s likely you’ll need your valid, up-to-date passport to get that visa. The Department of State has great resources if you need to get a passport for the first time.
