When you study abroad in Sydney, fitting into the city's fashion scene is easier than you would think. Sydney's fashion is very similar to the way we dress in America: keeping up with the latest trends while sticking to staple pieces. The one key thing to note before coming to Australia is that our seasons are switched. America’s hot summer happens to be Australia’s winter. In this fast-moving city, it’s fun to wear a nice summer dress in December and some warm jeans in June.
Sydney’s fashion sticks to the classic sundress movement and other trendy wear. Boutiques rule the streets of Sydney, which makes it easy for girls to stop in and pick up a trendy top or a pair of mom jeans. All of these convenient stores make the boutique-style a popular look. In the summer, skirts and sundresses dominate the fashion trend and can be dressed up with dangly earrings or chunky necklaces. One great look that most girls are seen wearing is the perfect sundress paired with white sneakers or wedges to make it more dressy. On the topic of the perfect outfit, a popular bag to rock in this city is a cross-body bag.
Make sure to pack that swimsuit that you can’t help but re-wear, because Bondi Beach is a hot spot to get some tanning in. Australia has beautiful beaches, so swimwear is a must! Along with wearing a swimsuit, you can throw on some jean shorts or a nice romper to walk around in. To complete the perfect outfit, make sure to pack a pair of sunglasses.
Sydney can go through some pretty wet periods in the spring, so pack your raincoat. You can buy rain boots in Sydney if needed, but you might be able to get by without them.
Winter in Australia gets fairly cold, so make sure to pack some thick jackets and warm sweaters. Girls will wear jeans with a cute sweater and a winter coat. Adding a scarf as an accessory is a common way to amp up the outfit. If girls are tired of wearing their jeans they stay trendy by wearing a skirt paired with a chunky sweater or even a dress with a long-sleeve shirt under it. Teddy jackets and booties are just as popular in Australia as they are in America, so make sure to pack yours!
Lastly, girls like to dress up for “uni.” In America, we are used to leggings and a big T-shirt, but girls typically tend to wear what they would for a cute girls' day out. So don’t be afraid to dress up for class!
