Being a Film Major in Prague

Moving across the world can be terrifying. Especially when you move to a place with a different primary language, different customs, and very different weather! Being a film major, I consider myself a student of life. Every aspect of life can contribute to your next film or story. That’s why I can’t be happier I chose Prague in the Czech Republic as my study abroad city. Cheers!

A culture of history. Prague has been at the center of historical events for hundreds of years. From avoiding air raids in the Second World War to being controlled by a communist government, Prague history, even just in the 20th century, makes it truly unique. It’s amazing to do some research and explore what history you can uncover there, to imagine what life was like during in Prague various time periods.

This photo was taken at a former communist train station which has since been decommissioned and fallen into disrepair. It’s hard to find such rich history in your own backyard, but in Prague, it’s always within reach.

An artistic culture. Art is everywhere in Prague, even in the places you might not think to look. Beyond museums of historic paintings and sculptures. The buildings themselves can be at least two hundred years old, some dating back to the 14th century. And my favourite part? The city looks like a movie set, with pastel coloured buildings on every block. It’s not uncommon to stumble upon a film set while walking through Prague. The city is one of Europe's film centers, with a prestigious film school FAMU along the river, an annual international film festival, and movie studios within city limits!

A reflective city: All creatives enjoy and need time to reflect on their art. For me, Prague couldn’t be a better city for self reflection. There are a plethora of beautiful views and parks which make it easy to find some alone time. I can also sit down at one of the MANY beautiful cafes and enjoy the most delicious coffee I’ve ever tried.

DO IT: I know it can be scary to leave the network and hustle-bustle of film school when you're a film student. But this time away in a cultured, beautiful city has allowed me to creatively breathe and find new inspiration even in the smallest of things!
