Being a Film Major in Prague

Moving across the world to study abroad in Prague can be terrifying. Especially when it’s to a place that speaks a different language, customs and very different weather! Being a film major I consider myself a student of life. Every aspect of life can contribute to your next film or story. That’s why I can’t be happier that I chose Prague in the Czech Republic as my study abroad city.

A Culture of History

Prague has been at the crossroads of history for hundreds of years. Being the center of European rule, to avoiding air raids in the second world war, to being controlled by a communist government, leaves Prague truly unique and jam packed with history. It’s amazing to do some research and exploring to see what history one can uncover, to imagine what life was like during these various time periods. This photo was taken at a former communist train station that has since been decommissioned and falls into disrepair. It’s hard to find such rich history in your own back yard, but in Prague it’s within reach.

An Artistic Culture

Art is everywhere in Prague, even in the places you might not think to look. Beyond tones of museums of historic paintings and sculptures. The buildings themselves can be at least two hundred years old, and some dating back to the 14th century. And my favorite part, it all looks like a movie set, pastel colored buildings on every block. And it’s not uncommon to stumble upon a film set while walking through Prague. It’s one of the film centers of Europe, with a prestigious film school FAMU along the river, and an international film festival held in the city, and movie studios within the city boundaries!

A Reflective City

All creatives enjoy and need time to reflect on their art. For me Prague couldn’t be a better city for self reflection. They are a plethora of beautiful views and parks, that make it easy to find some alone time. Or sit down at one of the MANY beautiful cafes and enjoy the most delicious coffee I've ever tried.

DO IT

I know as a film major it can be scary to leave the network and hustle-bustle of film school. But this time away in a cultured, beautiful city has allowed me to creatively breathe and find new inspiration even in the smallest of things!
