CEA Global Education, University of California Davis Program Awarded for Student Philanthropy, Receives NASPA Best Practices in International Education Award

Phoenix, Ariz. (Jan. 22, 2013) – CEA Global Education and the University of California, Davis, have been recognized as award recipients in NASPA’s 2013 Best Practices in International Education Awards. Winners are selected by the NASPA International Education Knowledge Community for exceptional work in international higher education.

The collaborative program, Language, Culture and Service in Florence, Italy, featuring CEA C’è, was selected as the award winner for Best Practices in student philanthropy. This category recognizes programs that encourage and facilitate student participation in internationally focused service.
"We're extremely thrilled about the recognition of this program as a NASPA Best Practices in International Education," said Margherita Heyer-Caput, Professor of Italian Studies at the University of California, Davis. "This award acknowledges the significance of our collaborative efforts across continents and institutions, and more importantly, underlines our student philanthropy component as a unique experience that helps our students become true citizens of the world."

CEA and UC Davis created this semester-length program in 2011, combining CEA’s in-classroom learning with cultural immersion through community-based internships and CEA’s volunteer program, CEA C'è. Within the term, students earn a year’s worth of Italian language credit and participate in an internship or volunteer placement with a local association, institution, nonprofit or company. These pairings help students to understand the importance of cultural awareness on a global scale, and advance the dialogue between U.S. students and Italian communities. The Language, Culture and Service in Florence, Italy, program, featuring CEA C’è, is offered each Fall semester.

CEA Florence faculty and staff developed CEAC'è, which translates as “CEA is There”, to provide students with a positive and structured way to engage and give back to the Italian community. The program’s success and popularity continues to grow. The program structure is largely due to the interest and commitment of institutions like UC Davis that value the importance of combining cultural learning experiences with student philanthropy.
