Tempe, Ariz. (March 6, 2012) – Kristopher Minter, a 23-year-old freshman majoring in International Studies at the University of Toledo in Ohio, is the recipient of a $5,000 scholarship from
CEA Global Education.
The scholarship was part of a four-week viral campaign with
Abroad101.com inviting students to enlist their friends and family in a Facebook competition. Students were asked to respond to describe why they felt they deserved this scholarship and how they would incorporate their study abroad experience back at their home institution or community. The best answer that also elicited the greatest number of Facebook “Likes” won.
"As an African-American, I will contribute to the mere 4 percent of us studying abroad in post-secondary schools," Minter said. "I am blessed to be a minority within a minority, but statistics like these are upsetting and need to change. ... Through sharing my experiences, I hope to change this dynamic."
Minter will take college courses for credit in liberal arts and business at CEA's Global Campus in Shanghai, China, for Fall 2012.
By applying early in CEA's application cycle, Minter managed to earn an additional $1,000 in savings off his program price.
"Participation in the
study abroad scholarship experience with CEA and Abroad101.com made it evident that financial support – a leading impediment to college students wishing to study abroad – is available if you are willing to put in a little extra effort," he said.
