About the Program
Designed for students at all French language levels, this program allows you to acquire and improve French language skills while earning credit toward your major or graduation requirements. Your language courses focus on grammar, vocabulary development, listening comprehension, and oral expression, and consist of two required components: language (cours pratiques) and phonetics. Combine these intensive language courses at the Sorbonne’s Cours de Civilisation Française (CCFS) with a wide range of electives, taught in English at the CEA CAPA Paris Center. Choose elective courses from subjects such as history, business, art history, cultural studies, communication, and political science. An Early Start option in the Fall semester allows you to jump start your language learning before the semester begins.

Cours de Civilisation Française de la Sorbonne
French language courses for CEA CAPA students are taught by the Cours de Civilisation Française de la Sorbonne (CCFS), a university center dedicated to teaching French language and culture to international students.
The CCFS was founded in 1919 by the Société des Amis de l’Université de Paris and is today an independent institution of higher education that retains institutional ties to Sorbonne University.
CEA CAPA students attend courses at the CCFS’ campus in the 7th arrondissement. This location features classrooms and phonetics laboratories, creating a learning environment within a beautiful Parisian neighborhood.
Credit Transfer Information
Cours de Civilisation Française de la Sorbonne utilizes a 60-minute contact hour whereas the United States higher education system utilizes a 50-minute contact hour. Recommended U.S. credits listed on CEA CAPA's website reflect a conversion of these contact hours. Credit transfer is ultimately determined by your home university. Please consult with an academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.
Transcript Information
Students receive a transcript from Cours de Civilisation Française de la Sorbonne upon successful completion of the program. Transcript includes the number of hours per week and the weeks in the semester so US colleges/universities may calculate the appropriate number of US credits they choose to award their students.
Accreditation
In addition to it’s 3-star rating by the Qualité FLE (on a three-star scale), the Cours de Civilisation Française de Sorbonne is monitored by the French Ministry of National Education as an official state institution.
Grading
Grade conversions from CEA CAPA partner institutions abroad to a US grading scale are determined in consultation with our School of Record and benchmarked with other peer institutions in the field.
Please note that CEA CAPA can only recommend grade conversions to students’ home institutions—it is ultimately at the discretion of the home institution to convert grades from abroad to students’ academic records.

Classroom and Information
- Language courses are taught by faculty at the Cours de Civilisation Française de la Sorbonne (CCFS).
- Periodic homework assignments and final examinations will be administered.
- Class attendance is mandatory and monitored by each professor. CCFS regularly communicates attendance records to CEA CAPA Paris.
- Course enrollment ranges between 10 and 25 students, allowing for personalized attention.
- Courses are specifically offered to be taken with other international students of equivalent language level and not with native French students.

Accreditation
Courses taught at the CEA CAPA Paris Center have been designed in conjunction with, and approved by, the University of New Haven (UNH). In addition, faculty appointments have been approved by UNH. After the successful completion of a session at the CEA CAPA Paris Center, you will receive credit for your work from UNH. Located in Connecticut, the University of New Haven is a student-focused, comprehensive university that’s fully accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). The agreement between CEA CAPA and UNH follows the highest standards of good practice in education abroad and satisfies the rigorous requirements of the University's institutional accreditor, making credits earned at the CEA CAPA Paris Center easily transferable to US-accredited institutions. Grading
Professors at the CEA CAPA Paris Center will carefully evaluate your work and progress throughout their academic session. When calculating the final grade, instructors consider written and oral exercises, homework assignments, attendance, classroom participation, and exam performance.

Classroom and Information
- Classes are taught by faculty selected by CEA CAPA and approved by UNH.
- Periodic homework assignments and final examinations will be administered.
- Class attendance is mandatory and monitored by each professor. You may access your grades and attendance on their CEA CAPA Student Portal.
- Class size is limited to 30, allowing for personalized attention.
- Language classes are designed to be taken with other CEA CAPA students of equivalent language levels.
- CEA CAPA Paris Center routinely welcomes local French students to enroll in English-language elective courses, thereby adding an international dimension.

Program Structure & Courses
Each semester, you'll enroll in 1 CCFS language course and 1-2 CEA CAPA courses. CCFS language courses meet for 145 contact hours/10 credits; CEA CAPA courses meet for 45 contact hours/3 credits.
You may earn 13-16 credits (up to 235 contact hours) per semester. If you choose the Early Start option, you may earn 16-19 credits (up to 280 contact hours). Academic year students may earn 26-32 credits (up to 470 contact hours); if you choose the Early Start option in the Fall, you may earn 29-35 credits (up to 515 credits).
The cours pratiques component of your CCFS language courses meets for 2 hours per day, Monday-Friday; the phonetics component meets for 1 hour per day, Monday-Friday, for a 5-week period. CEA CAPA elective courses meet 1-3 times per week, Monday-Friday. Early Start courses meet daily, Monday-Friday. Active learning components required by your courses may be scheduled for Fridays.
Prior to departure, you will select your preferred courses and take an online placement examination. Your course enrollments will be based on availability and the result of your placement exam. It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure due to course availabilities. To ensure that you receive credit for the language level you place into, have your home school pre-approve courses at several levels before you leave for France. Please consult with your academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.

Studios are located in student residences that house approximately 200-300 local and international students in single or shared studios. The Studio residences are a typical housing solution for local students, both providing the privacy of an apartment
(with kitchenettes and bathrooms in-suite) and the environment of student living. The Studio residences are located in a several different neighborhoods across the city, including the 20th arrondissement, the 13th, 15th, and 17th, as well as in nearby St Mandé, Montreuil, Levallois, and Ivry. Living in a studio in Paris will provide you with a true sense of French student life, will allow you to cook your own meals at home, and meet up with other residents in your building.
