About the Program
Study abroad in the south of France while participating in an American form of university education. Choose from a wide range of electives in subjects from business to communication, art history to psychology, education to humanities. Most elective courses are taught in English, allowing you to take full advantage of IAU College’s offerings. French language instruction is available at all levels of proficiency, from beginning to advanced. Semester students are required to take a French language course, while Summer students are encouraged, but not required, to enroll in a French language course.

IAU College
Founded in 1957 under the auspices of l'Université d'Aix-Marseille and chartered by the Regents of the University of the State of New York, Institute for American Universities (IAU) is one of Europe’s oldest and largest education abroad programs.
IAU College welcomes undergraduates from U.S. colleges and universities. Courses in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts are taught in French and English. In the context of Provence's rich Mediterranean heritage, IAU delivers curriculum that guides students to cultural competency while fostering a life-long affinity for the culture, language, and people of France.
Since its inception, IAU has worked with more than 30,000 students and 700 U.S. public and private colleges and universities, many of which are familiar with the high standards of Institute programs and which accept Institute recommendations for the direct transfer of academic credit to the home institution. A number of American universities and colleges have signed direct affiliation agreements and provide for direct transfer of academic credit. While IAU does issue its own transcripts, it understands that some institutional policies require students to obtain their study abroad credit from regionally accredited U.S. institutions. For these cases, IAU has an agreement with a U.S. school of record.
Credit Transfer Information
IAU College curricula and class schedules follow a U.S. university model. Credit transfer is ultimately determined by your home university. Please consult with an academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.
Transcript Information
Students receive a transcript from IAU college upon successful completion of the program. IAU issues an official, traditional American transcript with letter grades. IAU understands that some institutional policies require students to obtain their study abroad credit from regionally accredited U.S. institutions. For these cases, IAU has an agreement with a U.S. school of record. Students are encouraged to work directly with their study abroad office or academic advisors to determine if they will accept an official IAU College transcript or will require an official school of record transcript for credit transfer.
Accreditation
IAU is charted as an institution of higher education by the Regents of the State University of New York, and is recognized as an institution of higher learning by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, the French Ministry of the Interior, and the Rectorat of Aix-Marseille University.
Grading
Grade conversions from CEA CAPA partner institutions abroad to a US grading scale are determined in consultation with our School of Record and benchmarked with other peer institutions in the field.
Please note that CEA CAPA can only recommend grade conversions to students’ home institutions—it is ultimately at the discretion of the home institution to convert grades from abroad to students’ academic records.

Program Structure & Courses
Beginning French speakers will enroll in 1 language course and 3 elective courses. Intermediate and advanced speakers will enroll in 1 language course and 4 elective courses. Language courses meet for 45-90 contact hours/3-6 credits; electives meet for 15-90 contact hours/1-3 credits per semester. You may earn up to a total of 15-16 credits (up to 225-270 contact hours).
Classes meet Monday-Friday. Active learning components required by your courses may be scheduled for Fridays.
Before you leave for Aix, you'll submit an IAU course selection form and an IAU language questionnaire that estimates your language knowledge. An IAU advisor will evaluate your language questionnaire and transcript and either enroll you in courses or schedule a language placement exam that you'll take before your program starts. After you arrive on-site, French faculty will determine if you're the in correct language level; you'll have two weeks to add/drop if necessary.

The Residence Mirabeau complex is located in the center of town, in the historical Quartier Mazarin a 2-minute walk from the main street, the Cours Mirabeau and a 15-minute walk to CEA CAPA's partner schools in Aix. Residence Mirabeau is made up of forty studios on three floors. CEA CAPA manages a handful of studios - the other studios are occupied by French and international students studying in Aix. You will be sharing a studio with another CEA CAPA student.

Get out and explore! Excursions are offered for most semester, year, and summer programs. Semester students are typically offered between two to three excursions and summer study students are typically offered between one to two excursions.
