About the Program
Immerse into French language and culture as you attend class alongside other international students. Choose from a range of elective courses that deepen your understanding of French culture and complement your language learning; along with your language course, you’ll choose from elective courses in subjects like culture, European politics, literature, music, phonetics, translation, and writing workshops. Designed for students at beginning to advanced French language levels, all courses are taught in French in order to help hone your language proficiency, increase your understanding of French culture and history, and enhance your immersion experience.

You’ll take courses through the Service Universitaire des Langues (SUL), the university’s French language school. Founded in 1953, SUL (previously known as Service Universitaire de Français Langue Etrangère, SUFLE) is regarded as one of the best French-language teaching centers in the country and hosts about 1,000 students from 65 countries.
SUL offers instruction in French at all levels—from beginning to advanced—and prepares students for the diplomas of the Paris Chamber of Commerce and other diplomas and certificates. At SUL, you won’t just learn French language: you’ll also gain an understanding of and appreciation for France's literature, history, and culture.
Credit Transfer Information
Aix Marseille University awards credits based on the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) system. CEA CAPA credit hour recommendations are based on the following conversion: 2 ECTS credits equals 1 U.S. semester credit. Credit transfer is ultimately determined by your home university. Please consult with an academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.

Classroom and Information
- Language and elective courses are taught by international faculty at Service Universitaire des Langues (SUL), an extension of Aix Marseille University for international students who wish to learn French.
- Periodic exams, homework assignments, and final exams are administered.
- Attendance of classes is mandatory and monitored by each professor.
- Class size ranges between 10 to 30 students, allowing for personalized attention.
- You’ll take classes with other international students of an equivalent language level, not with native French students.
- The French style of teaching may differ from that in the U.S. Be prepared to adapt to different classroom structures and coursework expectations for your school.

Each semester, beginning French speakers enroll in 2 language courses and 1-2 elective courses. High-beginner, low-intermediate, and high-intermediate speakers enroll in 2 language courses and 1-3 elective courses. Advanced and above speakers enroll in 1 language course and 2-4 elective courses.
Language courses meet for 26-182 contact hours/2-12 credits; elective courses meet for 26-40 contact hours/2-3 credits per semester. You may earn 12-18 credits (up to 260 contact hours) per semester and 24-36 credits (up to 530 contact hours) per academic year. Language courses meet 4-5 days per week; elective courses meet once per week.
You'll take a written and oral language placement exam before you arrive in Aix. Based on the results, you'll be placed in a language class and select electives at your particular language level. It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure due to course availabilities. The Residence Mirabeau complex is located in the center of town, in the historical Quartier Mazarin a 2-minute walk from the main street, the Cours Mirabeau and a 15-minute walk to CEA CAPA's partner schools in Aix. Residence Mirabeau is made up of forty studios on three floors. CEA CAPA manages a handful of studios - the other studios are occupied by French and international students studying in Aix. You will be sharing a studio with another CEA CAPA student.
