DESCRIPTION

The module explores three linked components of political power: ideas, structures and agency. In liberal
democracies, political ideas and ideology motivate and drive political ‘actors’ (including individuals, parties and
movements) to compete over political power within the framework of constitutions, institutions and conventions that
define the ‘rules of the game’. The module examines the liberal democratic foundations of the UK political system
and the competing ideologies that operate within it; ways in which political power is allocated, won and lost; and
illustrates the power game through a study political leadership.
