DESCRIPTION

This modules covers concepts and techniques for analysis and processing of signals, and system analysis and design, with particular emphasis on topics relevant to the study of communication systems.

Learning Outcomes
1.Calculate the Fourier Series of common periodic waveforms, and hence derive their magnitude and phase spectra.
2.Explain the properties of the Fourier Transform, and use the Transform to analyse aperiodic signals.
3.Given a system transfer function, or other system description, characterise the system in terms of its time-domain and frequency-domain behaviour.
4.Given a desired filter specification, choose an appropriate filter design methodology, and determine the filter transfer function. Implement the filter using passive or active circuits.
5.Describe common sources of random noise in electronic circuits, and characterise them using statistical measures, and Power Spectral Density. Explain the behaviour of filters when excited with such noise.
6.Given a discrete-time system description, determine the behaviour of the system.
7.Calculate the Signal to Quantisation Noise Ratio of data acquisition systems, and use this to determine system parameters. Design appropriate anti-aliasing filters for use with such systems.
