DESCRIPTION

This module focuses on the design of reinforced concrete structures by studying the following: Introduction to allowable stress design and limit states design philosophies. Overview of modern LSD concrete codes, principally Eurocode 2. Analyse and design simple reinforced concrete structural members.

Learning Outcomes
1.Apply the knowledge of structural theory and construction technology in the design of structural elements.
2.Explain design philosophies and the need for and nature of design codes.
3.Apply knowledge of structural theory modified through practical considerations to derive the main design code formulations.
4.Display an understanding of the philosophy of structural safety embodied in the design EuroCode for reinforced concrete.
5.Display a knowledge of the resistance mechanisms of concrete in flexure and shear, and quantify the resistance.
6.Design simple reinforced concrete members, such as one-way spanning slabs, reinforced concrete beams, columns and pad foundations.
7.Identify appropriate design code clauses to apply to various design problems.
8.Communicate effectively design solutions through the preparation of formal design calculation sheets and structural drawings.
9.Produce reinforcement drawings and bar schedules for reinforced concrete members.
