DESCRIPTION

This modules provides a detailed examination of topics relating to communication signals and systems such as: Transport layer protocols, UDP, TCP, Local area networking, network topologies, medium access control, inter- and intra-LAN connectivity, satellite networking technology, DCME technology, Amplitude Modulation (AM), Frequency Modulation (FM), digital modulation.

Learning Outcomes
1.Understand the need for a transport layer protocol in a distributed communication system.
2.Evaluate the performance and complexity of different transport layer protocols.
3.Analyse the need for and operation of medium access control protocols in LANs and Propose suitable devices for the inter-connection of LANs and\or WANs.
4.Describe the operation of a basic satellite communication network and to recommend suitable equipment to increase satellite channel capacity utilising Digital Circuit Multiplication technologies.
5.Determine the characteristics of Amplitude Modulated (AM) signals, and describe their behaviour and spectra.
6.Describe systems for the generation and reception of AM signals, and determine system parameters.
7.Determine the characteristics of FM waveforms, and describe systems for the generation and reception of FM waveforms, with appropriate system parameters.
