DESCRIPTION

In this module, students will study how various elements of communication technology are used to deliver a variety of communication systems and networks. Topics studied include information compression, source coding, impact of noise on communication links, channel coding, OSI 7 layer model, taxonomy of transmission technologies, physical layer, line coding, data link layer protocols, networking layer, circuit and packet switched data networks, connectionless connection oriented services, IP, ATM.

Learning Outcomes
1.Characterise the properties of various line coding schemes and propose a suitable line-coding scheme for a particular application.
2.Design and appraise a source coding scheme for a given information source.
3.Assess the capabilities of various channel coding and interleaving schemes and design a Hamming/CRC/Convolutional channel coding scheme to meet performance criteria.
4.Compare and contrast various data link layer protocols based on complexity and efficiency.
5.Characterise the operation and behaviour of various forms of data networks and recommend a suitable type of network based on a set of requirements.
6.Outline and asses the structure and operation of the Internet and the functionality of the Internet Protocol
7.Compare the functionality of transport layer protocols (e.g. TCP and UDP) and recommend a suitable protocol to meet application requirements.
