DESCRIPTION

This module builds on CE3101 Geomechanics and Geology. The module includes some additional geomechanics theory and an introduction to geotechnical design.

Learning Outcomes
1. Solve seepage problems using flow nets in anisotropic and layered soils
2. Apply Terzaghi's theory to consolidation problems such as vertical drainage or surcharge schemes
3. Use stress path format and critical state theory to relate strength and volume changes for simple problems
4. Apply plane translational and circular rotational slip theories to slope stability problems
5. Compute stresses beneath loaded areas
6. Design shallow and deep foundations to Eurocode 7
7. Apply earth pressure theories to the geotechnical design of retaining structures
8. Perform a geotechnical desk study and interpret the results of a site investigation from various in situ tests
9. Determine the viability of pumped wells and evaluate the geological issues associated with fracking
10. Specify and supervise practical geotechnical tests in the laboratory, such as the oedometer test and undrained triaxial compression test, along with associated classification tests. Work as part of a team to perform the tests and produce a technical report of the experimental results
