DESCRIPTION

This module covers the fundamentals of civil engineering hydraulics. The course includes a laboratory component designed to reinforce student understanding of the core topics.

Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate familiarity with applications of Engineering Hydraulics in civil engineering.
2. Solve a wide range of standard hydraulics problems in the areas of hydrostatics, buoyancy and stability, forces exerted by moving fluids, and pipe flow systems.
3. Apply the conservation laws (mass, momentum, energy) to moving fluids.
4. Distinguish between flow types (laminar and turbulent, steady and unsteady) and measure rates of flow.
5. Explain the changes in the energy of a fluid that can occur in pipe flow systems.
6. Devise and develop solutions to hydraulics problems from first principles by using previously acquired knowledge of Mathematics, Mathematical Physics and Experimental Physics.
7. Appreciate the need to set out complex calculations in tabular form.
8. Apply scientific method to engineering experimentation.
9. Draw legitimate conclusions from experimental data and assess the likely sources of error and their effect on the conclusions drawn.
10. Write experimental reports using good report writing practice
