DESCRIPTION
This course responds to the need to understand the physics behind environmental challenges such as fossil fuel combustion and its associated atmospheric pollution burden, renewable energy technology, nuclear power, nuclear accidents and radiation protection
Learning Outcomes 1. Define thermal comfort and describe the environmental parameters that are required as inputs for the Thermal Comfort Equation. 2. Explain the principles of operation of fossil fuel combustion facilities, and estimate the rate of CO2 production associated with given fossil fuel combustion scenarios. 3. Explain the principles of operation of various renewable energy technologies, such as wind turbines, wave generators and fuel cells. 4. Describe the nuclear fuel cycle, and the sequence of events that resulted in accidents at nuclear installations such as Chernobyl and Fukushima. 5. Recognise the location of legislative documentation on environmental and occupational radiation protection.
