DESCRIPTION
This module introduces students to the design of streel structures and develops the basic skills required to complete structural design of steel elements. The following topics are covered; Structural analysis and load takedown calculations, tension member design, compression member design, steel connection design, and beam design. A substantial group project is also completed over the semester which implements problem based learning through a weekly design office workshop.
Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate a firm understanding of the basic methods of load transfer in buildings. 2. Complete a structural design in accordance with European design standards for a variety of steel tension and compression members. 3. Design simple steel connection details in accordance with European standards. 4. Complete the steps for design of a simple steel beam in accordance with existing standards. 5. Work as part of a group to develop an effective complete design solution for an industrial building roof system. 6. Effectively communicate design solutions through preparation of formal design calculations, structural drawings and design reports. 7. Demonstrate competencies in the use of a structural analysis software package.
