DESCRIPTION
This course introduces the students to Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry. The Euclidean geometry component covers both the synthetic and the algebraic approaches. It also covers some applications of spherical geometry.
Learning Outcomes 1. describe, with reference to appropriate examples, the difference between the synthetic approach and the algebraic approach to Euclidean geometry; 2. state and prove some of the basic propositions of Euclidean geometry; 3. apply deductive reasoning to solve geometric problems; 4. explain the classification of isometries of the Euclidean plane; 5. describe the symmetries of some simple shapes such as regular polygons; 6. calculate spherical distance, angles and areas; 7. compare and contrast the geometry of the plane with that of the sphere
