DESCRIPTION

This module will introduce concrete elements; behaviour and properties of concrete; concrete mix design, production; placing and associated on-site operations and testing. Engineering properties of timber and engineered wood products; structural design of timber structures to EC5; Laboratory testing of concrete and timber. Engineering properties of metals, polymers and FRPs

Learning Outcomes
1. Understand and describe the engineering behaviour of materials including metals, polymers, fibre reinforced composites, timber and concrete. Evaluate and select the appropriate materials for a particular use. Calculate the embodied energy and embodied carbon of materials and describe how they are used in a life cycle assessment
2. Explain the history of concrete development and the products that it makes. Explain the key steps in concrete production and supply including ordering, mixing, preparing the site, delivery, placing and curing.
3. Explain the properties of the constituent materials of concrete. Explain types of admixures and their effects on concrete properties. Explain the properties of fresh and hardened concrete
4. Explain tests on fresh and hardened concrete. Design a concrete mix to a prescribed specification.
5. Undertake, process and present results of standard concrete material characterisation tests
6. Describe the microstructure of wood and how it influences the properties. Describe wood-moisture relations and durability of timber. Describe the mechanical, thermal and environmental properties of timber.
7. Describe the European strength classification system and grading methods.Identify types of engineered wood products and their uses.
8. Design flexural and axially loaded structural timber elements to EC5 and present design calculations
