DESCRIPTION
Analytical methods applied to mechanical design; stress and strain analysis, linear and non-linear problems, constitutive laws, mathematical modelling of mechanical systems, system optimisation and reliability; multi-body contact. Applications to the design of beams, frames, pressure vessels, machine parts, thin plates and multi-body systems.
Learning Outcomes 1. Analyse and design three-dimensional stress states for plastic yield and plasticity 2. Formulate and identify different cyclic plasticity material models and hence design and analyse for elastic-perfectly plastic behaviour of beams and torsion for loading and unloading 3. Derive and apply the basic design equations and formulae for thin and thick walled axi-symmetric structures and apply them to the design of pressure vessels and rotating machines 4. Analyse and solve engineering systems using energy methods 5. Apply finite element analysis for design of internally-pressurised thin- and thick-walled pressure vessel 6. Report and present results of computational modelling of engineering design problems 7. Derive design equations and formulae for thin and thick curved beams in bending and apply them to the design of load bearing members in bending. 8. Derive and apply design equations for fracture and fatigue of engineering materials, machine components and structures, under a range of loading combinations.
