DESCRIPTION
This module investigates the use of plant-, algal-, and fungal- derived compounds for their uses including as medicines. The diversity of chemical compounds identified from plants/algae/fungi will be outlined and discussed in the context of their ecological roles as well as their taxonomic distribution and will highlight the importance of identification. The current sources of specific economically important products will be discussed with reference to sustainability and product quality and the role of biotechnology will be investigated. The methods used to identify products of potential pharmacological, and other uses, will be explored including the role of ethnobotany and traditional medicines as well as laboratory-based technologies. Product development will also be discussed.
