DESCRIPTION
This module is designed to provide students with a detailed knowledge of the application of advanced software both within telecommunication networks and on user devices. Topics which will be examined include structure and operation of PSTN, intelligent network services, design and dimensioning of telephony networks, cellular network technologies, structure of cellular network, operations and services within cellular networks, Android app development, mobile phone based sensing, Quality of Service (Qos) and other advanced IP networking topics, Voice and Multimedia over packet.
Learning Outcomes 1.Advise on the opreation, design and dimensioning of PSTN elements 2.Appraise the needs of proposed telephony networks and advanced services and specify suitable solutions. 3.Understand the operation of cellular networks and services therein across multiple different cellular technologies (3G or 4G) 4.Advise on adoption\enhancement of services and network architectures in both fixed and cellular networks 5.Ability to develop basic applications for Android based user devices in wireless networks and to apply them to mobile sensing applications 6.Outline the need for the QoS paradigm in modern data networks, compare/contrast the Intserv/Diffserv approach and assess the need for QoS for particular applications. 7.Characterise the structure and operation of VoIP networks compared to traditional circuit switched telephony networks. 8.Implement and assess packet loss concealment and inter/intra- talkspurt delay adaptation algorithms for use in VoIP networks.
