DESCRIPTION
This module relates to the design of reinforced concrete and steel structures to European design standards outlined in the Eurocodes. An indicative outline of the topics covered are: Design of class 1-4 steel beams, laterally supported and unsupported. Design of laterally-supported compound and plate steel girders. Web panels with intermediate transverse stiffeners. Code moment and shear interaction curves. Steel beam-columns. Use of Microsoft EXCEL spreadsheet design templates incorporating VBA coding for design tasks, e.g., column stacks. Design and detail reinforced concrete multistorey building frameworks and structural members including two-way spanning slabs, flat slabs, continuous beams, columns (braced, short and slender), foundations and retaining walls. Produce drawings and bar schedules for the above.
Learning Outcomes 1. Apply knowledge of structural theory to derive the main code formulations. 2. Identify, analyse and solve design problems in steel and concrete structures 3. Communicate design solutions effectively through drawings and presentations 4. Display the ability to work effectively, individually and in groups 5. Identify, analyse and solve design problems in concrete as follows: multistorey building frameworks; structural members including slabs, beams, columns (braced, short and slender), foundations, retaining walls in concrete; structural connections and reinforcement detailing in concrete 6. Analyse using computer software tools 7. Apply high ethical standards in structural design through: a capacity to ensure structural safety and economy, knowledge of best practice in design, acceptance of professional responsibility 8. Commit to life-long learning by virtue of an understanding of the constantly changing nature of design and technology (a process assisted by attendance at EI, IConcSoc lectures) and the resulting need for continuing professional development
