DESCRIPTION

An introductory course to pneumatics, electropneumatics, hydraulics, electrohydraulics, programmable logic control. This subject covers the fundamentals of automated equipment control circuitry from an applied perspective. The student on completion of the course has knowledge of the basic building blocks used in design of automated circuits and can read, interpret and create electro-pneumatic and hydraulic schematics. In addition they will understand how high-level PLC control works and can design their own PLC ladder logic circuits. The course covers: physical principles of automated equipment, function and use of pneumatic and electro-pneumatic components, design and draughting of electro-pneumatic components, logical functions, use of sensors, counters and timers, compressed air production, treatment and distribution. Automation and robotics, PLC programming and interfacing. Optical, capacitive and inductive sensors. Applications and design of hydraulic and electro-hydraulic circuits. Function and use of basic hydraulic components, symbols and standards, safety. There is a significant hands-on element in the course.

Learning Outcomes
1. Recognise and use the basic elements and components used in electro-pneumatic and hydraulic and circuits.
2. Recognize and use the symbols and conventions used in representing pneumatic and hydraulic circuits.
3. Interpret electro-pneumatic and hydraulic schematics and explain how the circuits operate.
4. Build simple electro-pneumatic circuits from schematics provided.
5. Design basic electro-pneumatic and hydraulic circuits from specifications provided and correctly depict the resultant design by means of conventional schematic drawings.
6. Describe how compressed air is produced, treated and distributed.
7. Describe how PLC controllers operate and how they can be incorporated in basic control circuitry.
8. Design basic PLC circuits using ladder logic mnemonic code.
9. Be capable of designing and simulating the operation of an electro-pneumatic circuit using the Festo Fluidsim electro-pneumatic design software.
