Florence has provided inspiration to several Anglo-American writers including poets (Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Lowell), novelists (E.M. Forster, Mark Twain), and travel writers / memoirists (John Ruskin; Mary McCarthy).

will rely on Florence's rich cultural and scientific heritage, from the medieval city to the modernity of the 19th century, all the way to the present-day mass tourism. Walking tours of the city and its outskirts will be an important part of the course.

Assignments, in the form of short stories, poetry, and non-fiction, will focus on helping students to find an individual voice and will prompt them to develop ideas and hone them through revision and drafting. Emphasis will also be placed on the students' ability to evaluate and critique their own work and that of others.
