DESCRIPTION

This course explores the history of colonialism, primarily but not exclusively through the expansion of European influence from the late fifteenth century onwards. Key concepts of colonialism, imperialism and empire will be examined in historical context, with particular attention paid to periods of change and confrontation. This will include discussion on the contraction and collapse of the formal imperial system in the second half of the twentieth century, along with contemporary incarnations of hegemony in the twenty-first century. The final section of the course will focus on transversal issues such as disease, labour, violence and racism.
