DESCRIPTION
This unit examines developments in the representation of gender through various cinematic modes from classical Hollywood cinema to the present day. It will focus on the early 1970s feminist interrogations of film and the theoretical corpus developed there from to address fundamental issues of women's identity in society, and representation in the media. Students will encounter a number of critical approaches - particularly psychoanalysis, semiotics, and queer theory - to investigate feminine and masculine filmic identities and the relationship between representation and politics.
