DESCRIPTION

This unit and builds on the work covered in 'Reading the Screen: Conceptualizing Film' and introduces students to Film Theory by examining specific films. It introduces students to the importance of film theory, its major concerns and places this within the history of film theory. The unit concentrates on the construction of subjectivity in film and will be looking at representations of gender identities, sexuality, race and questions of difference. This will involve close consideration of film theory and its deployment of structuralist, psychoanalytic, feminist, Marxist and deconstructive concepts and models. There will be screenings of films throughout the unit.
