Prerequisites: No previous knowledge or experience of printmaking or book arts is necessary for this course, though good manual skills and attention to detail and craftsmanship are desirable.
DESCRIPTION
This intensive hands-on course will introduce students to the art of printmaking in relation to the creation of bookworks. Students will learn both printmaking and hand-bookmaking techniques which will culminate in the creation of original finished bookworks. Printmaking techniques we will explore include (though may not be limited to) linoleum relief, drypoint, monotype and letterpress printing. Students will incorporate these techniques to create, at least, four to five individual and/or group books or editions. Book structures such as pamphlet stitch, accordion fold, longstitch, hinged album and japanese stab bindings will be introduced and students will incorporate their printworks into these diverse book forms. Group and individual critiques will take place throughout the semester.
