DESCRIPTION
This course provides students with a general overview of different surfaces in the Italian tradition. Materials such as marble, ceramics, and stone will be studied and a basic knowledge of how light is used to enhance surfaces and volumes will be discussed. The course aims to develop the ability to recognize and use different materials in a continuous exchange with the design process itself. Projects and choice of materials are part of a conceptual process that students will learn to understand during the course. Students will be asked to study existing projects and analyze materials in order to develop a critical approach to the design process. On-site visits will be held to specific sites related to the studied items. Students will develop a reference notebook focused on the specific materials and elements researched, discussed, and reviewed.
