DESCRIPTION
In this course, the student lays a foundation for an independent, individual study of the original language of the New Testament and of early Christian, hellenistic-Jewish, and pagan sources of the same period. Students acquire the capacity to read koine Greek by studying the idiom of the NT and its grammar (self-study), by discussing the language and texts in class (on site or online), and by making, correcting, and discussing tests in translating and rehearsing. The course will lead to basic knowledge of morphology, syntax, and semantics in order to be able to translate simple Greek clauses. Furthermore, differences in modern Bible translations and the interpretation of Biblical passages will be dealt with.
Contact hours listed under a course description may vary due to the combination of lecture-based and independent work required for each course therefore, CEA's recommended credits are based on the ECTS credits assigned by VU Amsterdam. 1 ECTS equals 28 contact hours assigned by VU Amsterdam.
