DESCRIPTION

How is identity (in particular ethnicity/race, gender, and sexuality) represented in American cinema? Theoretical concepts addressed in previous years include: breakout text (Andre Cavalcante), character engagement (Murray Smith), the male gaze (Laura Mulvey), 'Othering' (Stuart Hall), stereotyping (Richard Dyer), and queer subtext (Alexander Doty). Films discussed in previous years include: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Jezebel, Paris Is Burning, Philadelphia, Psycho, Single White Female, TransAmerica, and Vertigo. The selection of both concepts and films is subject to change.
