DESCRIPTION

This course compares and contrasts the distinct varieties of Spanish. It explores the following topics: Español vs. Castellano; geographic, social, and stylistic varieties of the Spanish language; colloquial Spanish; euphemisms and taboo words; significant differences between Latin American and Peninsular Spanish; Spanish spoken in the United States; the historical development of Spanish; and Spanish spoken in the different regions of Spain. These themes are practiced through class discussion, written essays and audio tapes which students transcribe.
