DESCRIPTION

New technologies (e.g. systems for detecting illnesses, criminal behavior, selecting the best employees, your news feed, the ads you see, tracking infected people, etc.) take over the world. These technologies better meet moral standards, but which?

In this course, we will read primary texts on the latest statements of the main theories in ethics (including contractualism, consequentialism, Kantian ethics, and theories of well-being), and utilize these to analyse moral dilemmas concerning new technologies (think of issues such as digital privacy and online manipulation).

At the same time, you will work on your research and writing skills (needed for a Bachelor thesis in practical philosophy).

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) awards credits based on the ECTS system. Contact hours listed under a course description may vary due to the combination of lecture-based and independent work required for each course therefore, CEA's recommended credits are based on the ECTS credits assigned by VU Amsterdam. 1 ECTS equals 28 contact hours assigned by VU Amsterdam.
