This course provides an overview of the conceptual underpinnings of history as an academic discipline. Its focus is on concepts such as interpretation, explanation, causality, narrative, truth and objectivity. Students are encouraged to take a position in the debate about the two questions that are central in this course: Is history a science? And: How is history different from other academic disciplines?

Contact hours listed under a course description may vary due to the combination of lecture-based and independent work required for each course therefore, CEA's recommended credits are based on the ECTS credits assigned by VU Amsterdam. 1 ECTS equals 28 contact hours assigned by VU Amsterdam.
