DESCRIPTION

This course explores the complex relationship between Europe and Islam from the medieval period to the present, focusing on themes of dialogue, conflict, and coexistence. Students will engage with primary sources, artistic traditions, and contemporary debates through discussions, readings, and experiential activities. The curriculum includes historical manuscripts, academic papers, and insights into key intellectuals and figures from both Islamic and European traditions. Students will analyze cultural expressions like films, poetry and music, reflecting the evolving interactions between Europe and Islam. The course examines the mutual influences of Judaism, Christianity, Greek thought, colonization, and globalization, providing a deeper understanding of how these forces have shaped historical encounters, policies, and societal integration across different European contexts. Through this, students will grasp the dynamics of influence and exchange in each era. A key focus is understanding how Islamic sources have described and perceived Europe and European traditions. Additionally, students will explore how Islam has been conceptualized in both Islamic and European intellectual traditions, with a particular emphasis on the role of human and social sciences in studying Islam, both historically and in modern times. Students will also be introduced to international institutions specializing in research on Islam and Europe, opening future horizons and career opportunities in academia, cultural institutions, and global policy. Through interdisciplinary perspectives, they will gain a nuanced understanding of the historical, cultural, and intellectual exchanges that continue to shape the modern world.
