DESCRIPTION
This practice-based module addresses the pedagogical imperative of engaging students kinaesthetically - i.e. through their mobile bodies - while addressing the contemporary trend in aesthetic theory towards 'The Affective Turn' (Clough, 2007). We see this 'turn' in various discussions of the place and role of the body in cinema, of emotion, and of the affects. For film practitioners the key concern raised in this context is with what the body means (for performers, filmmakers and spectators alike), how it communicates, how it moves, and what aesthetic and political interest is generated by its presence on screen. In this module there is the added concern of how the camera itself might come to represent, intervene on, or act as proxy for, the physical body as a site of fragility and wonder, but also as a site of cultural inscription and contestation.
